Chicago, IL 60630
Topic: Illinois, The 14th Colony (A slideshow and talk by Ralph C. Frese)
Cost: FREE for members of the Jefferson Park Historical Society and the Congregational Church of Jefferson Park;
$5 for the General Public
Ralph C. Frese is a river historian and a living legend. Born in the 1920’s, he is a fourth-generation blacksmith who built canoes for over 50 years at his Chicagoland Canoe Base in the Dunning neighborhood of Chicago.
Among his many accomplishments is the annual Des Plaines River Canoe Marathon, which is now in its 50th year! Additionally, Frese participated in the 300th anniversary reenactment of the Joliet-Marquette expedition of 1673. For this historic event, he created realistic 21-foot early Algonquin birchbark canoes made from fiberglass. Interestingly, these canoes were also used in the television mini-series "Centennial," James Michener's epic about the taming of the American west.
Ralph Frese has been the recipient of many federal, state and local awards. Recently, the American Canoe Association recognized him by presenting him with a national award given called “Legends of Paddling.” A 12-mile stretch of the north branch of the Chicago River has been designated the Ralph C. Frese Canoe Trail.
